The Bryant-Jordan Scholarship Program strives to promote individual growth in all student-athletes. This program awards scholarships to students who, by sheer determination, have overcome obstacles to achieve a level of excellence commensurate with their ability. These student-athletes exemplify, by their individual efforts, the dedication and commitment required to be the best they can be.

In each high school in Alabama an administrator may nominate a senior who the administrator believes is deserving of recognition for the achievement attained by that student. The student must have participated in the interscholastic athletic program of the school and also must have attained a measure of academic success. Within each of these areas the criteria are relative to the student’s ability. This award is NOT the outstanding scholar-athlete award. The Student-Athlete Achievement Award is intended to recognize those students who have become the “best they can be” and who have demonstrated their desire to achieve. The criteria considered in the selection process include the student’s academic performance relative to ability, the student’s athletic performance relative to ability, and the obstacles that the student may have overcome to attain that level of achievement. Because of the nature of this award, the selection committee requests one (1) letter of support for each nominee, in addition to the attached nomination form.

The secondary schools in Alabama are divided into six athletic classes based on enrollment. Each class is divided into eight regions with each region having 8 to 10 schools. In determining the Student-Athlete Achievement Award winners, the following procedures are used:

1.Selected administrators in the state determine the nominee from each school, area, and, region within each class;

2.The nominees from 48 regions are evaluated by a state committee to determine the achievement award winner from each class; and

3.The six class winners are evaluated by the state committee to determine the top achievement award winner.

It is the desire of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame and the Alabama High School Athletic Association that you nominate a student from your school who you believe is deserving of recognition fro their efforts.

The attached form must be used to nominate your student-athlete. The narrative portion of the nomination form should be used to amplify the qualiﬁcations of the student, including obstacles overcome and/or how this student has demonstrated constant effort in becoming the best he or she can be.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPLETING NOMINATION FORM

PART I

In this section ﬁll in the requested information. Be sure to include the student’s telephone number. Indicate within which area, region, and class the high school competes in interscholastic athletics.

PART II

In this section indicate the nominee’s cumulative grade point average at the high school level (grades 9–12) as well as the highest score received on ACT or SAT.

PART III

List all interscholastic sports in which the nominee participated. Indicate the number of years played and position (if appropriate). The particular sport played is NOT a criterion for selection.

PART IV

In this section indicate all athletic honors bestowed upon the nominee such as All-American, All- State, All-County, All-City, Most Valuable Player, or Team Captain. Be sure to indicate in which sport the student was honored.

PART V

In this section indicate all ofﬁces held by the nominee in student government, class ofﬁces held, any club ofﬁces held, and any other indicators of the nominee’s leadership role in the school (e.g., yearbook editor, newspaper editor).

PART VI

Indicate the student’s participation in civic and/or church related activities that demonstrate the student’s leadership ability and involvement in areas outside of the school. These activities might include teaching Sunday School classes, membership in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Campus Crusade, working with youth in a YMCA or community sponsored recreational program, scouting, etc.

PART VII

The narrative should be used to amplify the qualiﬁcations of the student and to highlight those areas of the student’s achievement most deserving of recognition. The narrative may be completed by someone other than the nominating individual but should be on the nomination form and no longer than one (1) typewritten page. One (1) additional letter of support is required for this award and may come from a coach, a member of the clergy, a teacher, a physician, or some other non-relative.

A COPY OF THE STUDENT’S TRANSCRIPT, INCLUDING ALL TEST SCORES (STANFORD, BCT, AND AHSGE) MUST ACCOMPANY THIS NOMINATION. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION MAY BE REQUESTED DURING THE SELECTION PROCESS.
