Straight Bill of Lading Form

The opportunity of international freight transportation has opened the borders of the world for us. We can get almost anything from anywhere on the earth. The shipping business has invented many documents to optimize its work. One of the main documents is the Bill of Lading (BOL).

In this article, we will look at what this document is and pay special attention to one of its types — the Straight Bill of Lading.

What Is a Bill of Lading

It is a binding legal document used in the shipping business and the carrier of goods. It reflects all important data regarding the transportation of goods. The document is completed by a carrier and provided to a shipper or seller. The document is needed to confirm the boarding of items on the ship.

Although we are talking about the shipping industry, the document can also be used in air or land shipping. It may also be known by other names:

  • Consignment BOL
  • Sea waybill
  • Ocean BOL
  • ProBill
  • Airway BOL

The essence of all these reports is the same — they present the necessary data for processing a cargo shipment.

Significance of the Document

This paper is a legal document that can be used in court in case of litigation. Therefore, it is important to pay special attention to the preparation of the document and avoid mistakes. Check the document carefully during registration. It must correctly reflect reality.

The form has three main meanings. It functions as:

  • Evidence of Contract of Carriage

Precisely as evidence, and not as the contract itself. The agreement between Carrier and the Shipper had already been signed.

  • Document of Title

This indicates that the holder of the document is the owner of the goods being transported.

  • Receipt of Goods

The issuance of this document means that the carrier received all the goods per the contract and issued this paper in return.

Types of the Form

There are several types of this document. The main ones are:

  • Order BOL — In this case, shipment is made to the buyer or distributor, and the goods themselves are sold on trade credit.
  • Clean BOL — Proof that the goods were shipped in good condition.
  • Straight BOL — This document is used for full payment for goods that are sent directly to the buyer. Let’s consider this type of form in more detail below.
  • Other types of forms that also exist: Soiled, Inland, Through, etc.

What Is Straight BOL

It is one of the most basic documents in cargo transportation. It is a non-negotiable record. To draw up such a document, the transported goods must have already been paid for or not require payment (gifts or donations). They are sent directly to the consignee, who must present an identity card to receive them.

Pros and Cons of Straight BOL Form

As in any legal case, there are pitfalls here. Let’s figure out what are the positive and negative aspects of using this type of document.

Benefits:

  • The goods are collected only by the specified consignee upon presentation of an ID. This may not always be convenient, but it removes the risk of erroneous delivery of goods.
  • Fast receipt of goods since it is not required to present the original bill of lading. Downtime at the port is reduced, which will benefit both importers and exporters.

Disadvantages and risks:

  • Risks for the payment under the letter of credit and cash for the issuing banks.
  • Once the document is issued, it can not be changed.

Main Parts of the Document

Each form contains the following data:

  • Contact data of the shipper and the consignee;
  • Tracking numbers including PO and account numbers;
  • Details of the departure and destination;
  • Special instructions;
  • Dates of shipment and arrival;
  • Description of the goods;
  • Payment information.
