When witches go riding and black cats are seen, the moon laughs and whispers “It’s near Halloween.” Once upon a time, about 2000 years ago, Hallowe’en (original spelling) was intro- duced during the ancient Celtic festival of “Samahin,” the end of the harvest season. It was believed that on October 31st, the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead got a little blurry and that the dead would come back and wreak havoc among the living. How do we scare the dead? We wear cos- tumes and masks of course.
Halloween is the second most commercial holiday in the U.S. Americans spend roughly $6.9 billion on Halloween; mostly for candy, costumes and parties. Even our pets are not spared from dressing up. Of that almost seven billion dollars, about two bil- lion is spent on candy which is roughly 600 million pounds or about the weight of six Titanic ships.
Now think of a small Chihuahua in a Halloween costume weighing about 3.4 pounds. That’s the amount of Halloween candy eaten by Americans each year – calories definitely count! Kids consume about 7,000 calories on Halloween (which equals around 66 bananas).

Have you attended a show at the Majestic Theater lately? Built in 1929, it is a beautiful theater; however some folks believe that it is haunted by an elderly gentleman who broke his neck falling from a catwalk above the stage. Occasionally his spirit appears above the stage during productions causing members of the audience to scream as his apparition falls to the stage below. Splat!
Halloween is the perfect season to stroll the campus of Our Lady of the Lake, but you may not want to do so at night. It’s said that late at night misty forms are seen wandering the
halls. You also have the watch out for the ghostly nuns
who watch to make sure no student even thinks about practicing witchcraft – no
Ouija Boards allowed!

Some folks pass on staying at the Gunter Hotel, no matter how nice its amenities, as the figure of a woman who was murdered in one of the rooms has been reported. Her spirit is seen wandering the hotel at night. The maids have complained of finding rooms covered in blood, yet are totally normal on their return visit. Gruesome!

The Emily Morgan Hotel celebrates Halloween with a spooky Haunted History Package which includes a guest room on the 7th, 9th or 14th floor, two tickets to the Alamo City Ghost Tour and a couple of special Halloween welcoming drinks. However, be careful as you wander the halls at night. A little boy, who supposedly died when he broke his neck, is known to hang out by the stairwells. The Freeman Coliseum is one of the city’s favorite venues for good times. During one of your visits do be careful should you spot a bloody baby wriggling on the floor. It’s rumored that the building was once used for a satanic ritual where a baby was sac- rificed. Those who try to pick up the baby receive large burns on their arms from an unseen force. So, a word to the wise, don’t pick up any bloody babies at the Rodeo.
The oldest hotel west of the Mississippi, The Menger, is one of San Antonio’s special places and one of the most haunted. So close to The Alamo, some guest have spotted the spirit of Teddy Roosevelt as he haunts the Menger, while other visitors have reported being attacked and choked by three ghostly women who randomly appear in rooms in the middle of the night. On the good side: the attacks have yet to kill anyone. The bad side: many guests required therapy after the ghostly experience.
If you’re afraid of Halloween, then you may suffer from Samhainophobia. However, don’t be scared of spiders on Hal- loween, as they are believed to be the spirits of deceased loved ones who are watching over you. Pumpkins and Halloween go together like candy and Halloween: Carving pumpkins is fun and it’s also believed that they scare away evil spirits – so best get busy carving your pumpkins!
