What is NSFAS?
It is an acronym for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme. NSFAS is a statutory body, funded primarily by South Africa's National Department of Higher Education, providing study loans to academically deserving and financially needy students who wish to study at one of South Africa's public higher education institutions. NSFAS has appointed the University of Johannesburg (UJ) to administer funds on its behalf.
What does academically deserving mean?
Senior students must pass 6o% of his/her registered subjects. First year students must be approved for a formal academic qualification and the highest APS scores will be considered. Loans are not granted for Access, Certificate, any non-subsidised vocational or extra-curricular courses. All NSFAS loans are granted subject to availability of funding . You are therefore not guaranteed a NSFAS loan if you have the minimum academic and income requirement.
What does financially needy mean?
An electronic means test provided by NSFAS is used to determine financial need. This test makes it possible to determine the exact rand value of what NSFAS regards as an acceptable (expected) contribution of that student’s family towards
his/her studies, as well as determining the exact rand value of a NSFAS award. All NSFAS loans are granted subject to
availability of funding. You are therefore not guaranteed a NSFAS loan if you have the minimum academic and income requirement.
When is the closing date for handing in of a NSFAS application?
The closing date is 1 October each year for the following year of study. Avoid long queues and hand in your application as early as possible. If you have outstanding documents, you then still have time to collect these documents and hand it in before the closing date – without wasting your time in long queues.
Do I need to pay an application fee to apply for NSFAS?
No application or administration fees are payable. First time applicants need, however to apply at the university to be eligible to hand in a NSFAS application form. No acceptance letter is needed to hand in the NSFAS application form.
May I mail my application?
No e-mailed or faxed applications will be accepted. Postal applications will be accepted before the closing date if all required documentation is included. If documentation is not included the form will be returned and the application will be regarded as unsuccessful. The University of Johannesburg does not take responsibility for undelivered or missing postal applications. Mail your Academic and NSFAS application separately and mark it clearly: For attention: UJ NSFAS
Office.
What happens if I do not hand in my application form before 1 October or if documents are outstanding?
No late or incomplete applications will be accepted and you will be responsible to pay your own fees for 2015.
Do I have to apply for NSFAS every year?
YES. You have to apply for NSFAS every time you need to REGISTER. Previous or current NSFAS loans do not guarantee future NSFAS loans.
7
What happens after I handed in my application?
You will be issued with a receipt of confirmation once you handed in your application (please keep this receipt for reference)
Academic results and financial need of students are evaluated and a report is published on 15 December on www.uj.ac.za. This report will indicate if your application was successful. If not - it will indicate the reason why your application was declined. It is your responsibility to find out if your application was successful.
What happens if my application is successful?
OIn January log into the UJ student portal and schedule an appointment to sign your loan agreement form. There are limited appointments and funding available.
ORegister with R490.
OMake sure you are on time and at the right venue for your appointment.
If you do not sign pre-agreement and loan agreement forms your UJ account will not be paid and your NSFAS loan will be cancelled
What happens if my application is NOT successful?
Reason: Academic
According to NSFAS regulations you should pass 60% of your number of registered subjects. You are therefore responsible for your own fees.
Reason: Expected family contribution (EFC)
It means that your expected family contribution is higher than R0. The UJ NSFAS office is committed to assist students who would normally not qualify for financing at commercial institutions such as banks. Unfortunately funding is limited and UJ has to assist the neediest students first. A means test provided
by NSFAS is therefore used to determine financial need. This test makes it possible to determine the exact rand value of what NSFAS regards as an acceptable (expected) contribution of that student’s
family towards his/her studies, as well as determining the exact rand value of a NSFAS award. The NSFAS Means Test therefore uses the size of the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) as a measure of the financial need of a student. A large EFC indicates a relatively more financially able family, whilst a small EFC indicates a financially needy family. You are therefore responsible for your own fees.
What does a NSFAS loan cover?
A NSFAS loan may be used to pay tuition fees, books & university accommodation fees. The loan also pays for approved selected off campus accommodation.
