The AKC Foreign Dog Registration Application connects internationally pedigreed dogs with the American Kennel Club Stud Book. When a dog born abroad in an AKC-recognized country joins a household in the United States, this application is the official path to AKC status. Approved dogs gain access to AKC conformation shows, performance events, and companion programs across the country.

Documents Needed for the AKC Foreign Dog Registration

Having all documents needed before submitting the application prevents delays and rejections. The most popular reason applications are returned is an incomplete package. The AKC requires the following materials for each submission:

Original documents must not be mailed. The AKC only accepts photocopies to protect against loss. For additional guidance, the AKC document library on their official site lists accepted pedigree sources and document standards.

AKC Application Requirements and What the Form Asks For

The top portion of the form collects dog identification details, including the original registration number, breed, date of birth, sex, and color markings. The middle section asks for sire and dam information, while the lower portion records owner and breeder data.

Owner information includes the first owner's full name, mailing address, date of purchase, and contact details. If there is a second owner, that person's information is also needed. The breeder section asks for the name and address of the person who bred the dog.

Frequently Asked Questions About AKC Foreign Dog Registration

Does submitting the application guarantee my dog will be registered?
No. The AKC reviews each application individually. If documents are missing or do not meet AKC standards, the application may be returned without processing. Processing fees are nonrefundable in all cases.

Which foreign registries are recognized and popular with the AKC?
The AKC recognizes registries from many countries. Popular examples include the Kennel Club of the United Kingdom, the Canadian Kennel Club, and registries from continental European countries. Verify that your dog's original registry is on the AKC accepted list before applying.

What AKC events can a registered dog participate in?
Once registration is approved, the dog may participate in AKC conformation shows, agility and obedience events, and companion programs. Eligibility depends on the dog's breed and registration category.

Are processing fees nonrefundable?

Purpose

Use this application to register a dog born in a foreign country. The dog must be of a breed eligible for individual

 

registration in the AKC Stud Book. AKC rules and regulations may be viewed on our

 

Web site: www.akc.org. Once submitted, this application becomes the property of the American Kennel Club.

 

 

Fees

You must pay the registration fee in U.S. funds. Do not send cash. Processing fees are nonrefundable and all fees

 

are subject to change without notice.

 

 

Required

The following items must accompany the completed, signed application:

 

Certifi cate of Registration. Attach a clear, legible photocopy of the original unrestricted (not a Limited

Breeding) Certifi cate of Registration indicating the dog’s registry and owner of record. Do not send the

 

 

 

 

original certificate. The AKC application and the foreign registration must refl ect identical ownership.

 

 

Pedigree. Attach a clear, legible photocopy of the complete foreign three-generation Certifi ed Pedigree from the

 

 

registry in the dog’s country of birth (Export Pedigree if dog has been Imported to the US). Acceptable registries

 

 

are listed in Section IV of the Special Registry Services pamphlet available on our Web site: www.akc.org. Do

 

 

not send original pedigree.

Photographs required for all dogs. Attach two (2) 3” x 5” close-up color photographs of the dog in a standing

 

 

position: one front view; one side view. Print the dog’s name and registration number on the back of each photograph.

 

 

Bescheinigung. Attach a German certifi cate of transfer in letter form, if applicable. Do not send original

 

 

Bescheinigung.

• The dog must be registered with the name that appears on the Foreign Registration Certificate/Certified Pedigree.

Requirements

Foreign titles will not appear on any AKC documentation.

 

• If there are more than two (2) owners of the dog, contact the AKC for an Additional Signature form.

 

• A Supplemental Transfer Statement must accompany this application for each intermediate

 

transfer (that is, any transfer other than the fi rst transfer occurring in the U.S. that is documented on this form).

 

Note: Effective for imported dogs registered on or after March 1, 2006, any imported dog registered with the

 

AKC must have an AKC DNA profi le prior to registering its fi rst litter whelped in the United States.
