Ca9176 Form PDF Details

Introduced in April 2011, this form lets grandparents and other eligible family members apply for Specified Adult Childcare credits. These National Insurance credits fill gaps in your NI record and count toward your State Pension entitlement and certain bereavement benefits. Unlike Child Benefit credits, which are awarded automatically to parents, Specified Adult Childcare credits require a formal application.

Who is Eligible?

You can apply if all of the following apply to you:

What Do the Credits Provide?

Each approved credit year fills one gap in your National Insurance record. This counts toward both the basic and new State Pension. Credits also protect eligibility for certain bereavement benefits. Only one person per child per year may receive the transferred credit. The parent does not lose their own NI credit when they transfer it to you.

How to Apply

You must apply separately for each tax year you are claiming. Applications are accepted from 31 January following the end of the relevant tax year. Both you and the child's parent or main carer must sign the declaration section. Send the completed form to HMRC at the address stated in the guidance notes. Processing typically takes up to 10 weeks. For related paperwork, see the National Insurance form or review the BR1 pension form for State Pension claims.
