International visitors to the United States used the Form I-94 Arrival/Departure Record card when entering the country to show when and how they were admitted, and when their authorized stay would end. Airlines or officers handed out this small paper card, which travelers completed and then had stapled into their passports on arrival.
Form I-94 documented the following:
✔️ Traveler’s full name, date of birth, country of citizenship, and passport details.
✔️ Admission number used to track entry and departure.
✔️ Class of admission (status), date of arrival, and authorized length of stay.
✔️ U.S. address and contact details while in the United States.
✔️ A detachable departure record that carriers or border officers collected when the traveler left.
It provided key proof of lawful entry and status for work authorization, driver’s licenses, and other benefits.
Note: Today, CBP creates I-94 records electronically for almost all travelers. Visitors now retrieve their I-94 online at the official CBP I-94 website or through the CBP One app.
