Form CD 9605 is a tax form used to report certain information relating to the sale or exchange of property. The form must be filed by the person who disposed of the property, and it must be attached to their income tax return for the year in which the disposition occurred. Form CD 9605 is used to report gains and losses from dispositions of: (1) capital assets held for more than one year, (2) capital assets held for less than one year, and (3) ordinary assets. Disposing of capital assets can result in either a gain or a loss, which must be reported on Form CD 9605. Gains and losses are classified as long-term or short-term depending on how long the asset was held before being disposed of. Generally, any gain or loss from the disposition of a capital asset is treated as long-term if it is realized on account of a sale, exchange, involuntary conversion, abandonment, gift, or death.
