Pet Photo Release Form

In the United States, a pet photo release form (or animal photo release form) is a legal document signed between a pet owner and an animal photographer.

This type of photo release form shows that the photographer has the owner’s consent to take photos of animals and use them for various purposes. On the other side, when signing this release of liability form, the owner agrees on not getting any money for the images (or any other content) with the pet.

Not everyone feels comfortable when their animals suddenly become models for photographers. Therefore, a pet photo release is a handy form that ensures the safety of the photographer (or videographer, if the form includes such provisions).

This form is brief and should contain specific details about the pet, who owns it, and the granted permissions. To complete the document correctly, the parties should add:

  • Owner’s and pet’s names
  • Actions that are allowed regarding the pet
  • The name of the one who gets permission
  • The signature and date of signing.

When to Use Pet Photo Release

Someone could take a photo of your pet for various purposes. For instance, a pet (or animal) photo release is a document that may be used if a pet is taking part in an advertisement or its picture is required for website content.

The form can also be signed when a pet is a participant in a contest. Other similar situations might require an animal photo release form signed by the owner.

General Steps: What to Consider When Signing a Pet Photo Release Form

  • Define why you are Signing this Form

Usually, this form is completed when someone needs a pet’s photos for promotion, filming, portfolio, or somewhat similar. As a photographer, you should clearly state why you need the photos, explaining to the owner where the photos and videos will appear.

Remember that a pet photo release form does not guarantee the owner any payments or royalties for the pet’s images. If you are the photographer, pay attention to the conditions stated in the form and the actions you conduct after signing the paper. Once you have understood both these points, proceed to the next step.

  • Meet the Other Party

You must insert the name of the other party. If you are the photographer, introduce the pet owner, and vice versa.

If you are the owner, you should trust the photographer. If you are the photographer, pay attention to the pet’s state and the owner’s behavior while filming or taking pictures. Both sides of the contract should discuss the process in advance.

  • Think of the Permission Degree (As an Owner)

You should clearly state in the form what pictures the photographer is allowed to take and for which purposes.

  • Sign the Form (Or Get the Signed Form)

Without the owner’s signature, it would not be possible to take any photos or videos of the pet. Before you start filming or taking pictures, ensure that the owner has signed the form and all the details included in the document are correct.
