Registering a Motor Vehicle in Wyoming

Once you acquire the vehicle, it is needed to register it properly in the nearest County Treasure’s Office in Wyoming state. Various penalties and lateness fees may be applied if the new car owner fails to apply for the title under 45 days from the day of purchase. On the other hand, the seller must write the buyer’s information in the title, provide the odometer disclosure statement, and hand over these documents to the buyer.

To ensure the transaction is successful and secure ownership rights, the buyer must provide several documents to the clerk’s office in the buyer’s county. Most counties require to prepare the following documents for the registration process:

  • Vehicle title (received from the seller)
  • Odometer disclosure statement
  • Owner’s passport, driver’s license, and proof of residence
  • Application for Certificate of Title and VIN/HIN Inspection Form
  • Liability insurance document (except for trailers)
  • Bill of sale
  • Fees for registration and title

Sometimes, the person will also need to provide the financing statement, proof of VIN inspection, and lien release.

The vehicle registration needs to be renewed annually, as the plates expire on the last day of the month. Registration fees are calculated, and the final number combines the county (ad valorem tax) and state fees. The registration fee is the same for any county within Wyoming state. The fee depends on the type of the vehicle and its overall weight and can vary from $25 for MPVs to $90 for trailers that weigh over 6000 lbs.
