The Bennett Mechanical Comprehension Test (BMCT), Form T, is a standardized assessment developed by Pearson to evaluate mechanical aptitude. It is one of the most widely used pre-employment assessments for roles in installation, maintenance, and repair across industrial, manufacturing, and technical sectors. Hiring managers use it to identify candidates who understand how physical systems and machines work.
The assessment measures three core skill areas. First, spatial visualization evaluates how well a person understands how objects relate and move in three-dimensional space. Second, mechanical reasoning tests the ability to apply physical principles such as force, speed, pressure, and motion. Third, technical deduction assesses how well a person can interpret how machines, gears, and tools function when shown diagrams of physical systems.
Form T contains 68 diagram-based questions, each presenting an illustration of a mechanical scenario. Questions cover topics including simple machines (levers, pulleys, wheels, and inclined planes), basic forces (gravity, friction, and air pressure), gear systems and rotational speed, fluid pressure and hydraulics, and structural loads. The standard administration time is 25 minutes for most versions.
Scores are expressed as percentiles, comparing the test-taker's result against a norm group relevant to their target occupation. A percentile of 43 means the person performed better than 43 out of every 100 people in that reference group. Most employers set a benchmark between the 40th and 60th percentile depending on the complexity of the role.

Because the assessment provides a percentile score rather than a pass/fail grade, the interpretation depends on context. A candidate scoring at the 35th percentile might be a strong fit for an apprentice-level maintenance role, while a senior equipment technician role may require a score at the 65th percentile or above. Employers typically use the results alongside an employment form and structured interview to make final decisions.
