Today, the LDS Church released a new statement called Form Ldss 3134. This statement is in response to the recently-released documentary film "The Principle" by producers Rick and Cheryl film. In this document, the Church reaffirms their stance on the eternal principle of plural marriage. While polygamy was officially discontinued in 1890, the practice still occurs amongst some breakaway Mormon sects today. The documentary seeks to explore the idea that polygamy may have been introduced to help populate heaven, and that those who do not engage in polygamy are somehow deficient. The LDS Church has long maintained that polygamy was introduced as a trial doctrine for those living in difficult times and was never meant to be permanent. They also state that polygamous families suffer from poverty and social isolation more often than monogamous families do.
