Alaska does not require a bill of sale to transfer ownership of a vehicle. The DMV says a bill of sale is not valid for ownership transfer. It does say it is a good idea to have the buyer sign a bill of sale stating that they purchased the vehicle.[1.2] If you write one, the DMV says to include these items:
Signing the title is a separate step. The seller must sign where indicated on the title and complete the assignment to the new owner. If the front of the title has an "and" between the owners, all owners must sign where indicated to release the title.[1.1]
The odometer reading must also be certified when the vehicle is less than ten years old. The person transferring ownership makes a written statement of the mileage. A reading known to differ from the true mileage may not be represented as the actual mileage.[1.1]
