Registering a Motor Vehicle in Kentucky

To register a motor vehicle in Kentucky, the owner must know the relevant laws to drive their car legally. Registration of both new and used vehicles is required in Kentucky. Suppose you are a new country resident and have previously registered your vehicle with another state. In that case, you still need to go through the registration process under the state of Kentucky through the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. If you want to renew the registration, it is done annually by mail, in-person, or online.

You are given 15 days to complete the vehicle registration process in Kentucky if you have purchased the vehicle or want to transfer your vehicle’s ownership. But if you are a new resident of Kentucky, you’re given ten days to complete the registration process of your vehicle.

If you register a vehicle in Kentucky for the first time, you must bring a photo ID, proof of Kentucky insurance within 45 days, fees and taxes applicable, and vehicle inspection proof. You should follow these steps to register your vehicle appropriately:

  • First, you need to check your motor vehicle at your local sheriff’s office
  • Correctly transferred certificate of title
  • Once the vehicle passes the inspection process, an inspection certificate will be issued, and a vehicle title form must be completed along with the Kentucky registration form
  • To complete the registration process, you must provide the manufacturer’s certificate of origin, social security number, and the title lien statement
  • Then you need to go to your local county clerk’s office and provide valid proof of insurance and an odometer reading for your vehicle, which is less than ten years old
  • If your vehicle has been registered outside the state of Kentucky, you must also bring along the original title of the vehicle and the proof of payment of sales tax

To complete the registration process of your vehicle, you are required to pay a certain amount of fees at the clerk’s office:

  • The registration fees depend on the vehicle type, but the registration fee is usually $21
  • The title fee is $6

Along with the above charges, there can be additional registration fees.

Additionally, you must consider and prepare the following registration forms to successfully register your newly purchased vehicle.

  • Completed Application for Kentucky in the certificate of title or registration (Form TC 96-182)
