On March 4, 1932, the Internal Revenue Service released a new form for individual income tax returns. Form 1040 was two pages long, and taxpayers were required to provide information about their income, deductions, and exemptions. The form was designed to be simpler and more concise than its predecessor, Form 1021. Thanks to the New Deal's efforts to streamline the tax process, taxpayers could file their returns electronically starting in 1954. Forms 1040A and 1040EZ followed in 1985 and 1988, respectively. Today, the IRS issues over 100 million individual tax forms each year.
