30 Teaching Permit PDF Details

The 30-day substitute teaching permit is issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC). It authorizes you to serve as a day-to-day substitute teacher in preschool through 12th grade classrooms for up to 30 consecutive days per teacher assignment. Special education placements are limited to 20 days per assignment.

To be eligible, you must hold a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited U.S. institution. You must also meet the Basic Skills Requirement by passing an approved test such as the CBEST, or qualify for an approved exemption listed in CTC regulations.

The application fee is $102.65, paid at the time of submission. Applications are filed online through the CTC's Online Direct Application portal. After completing the online portion, all supporting materials, including official transcripts, fingerprint clearance, and your application checklist, must be submitted within 30 calendar days.

Fingerprint clearance is required for all applicants. First-time applicants submit Live Scan prints through an authorized location. Clearance is processed through the California Department of Justice and the FBI before the permit is issued. Applicants with a prior California credential may follow a different fingerprint submission process.

The permit is valid for one school year and may be renewed. To renew, submit a new application with current documentation before your current permit expires. Late renewal requires a new initial application rather than a simple renewal. School districts may also set additional local requirements beyond the CTC minimums.
