Apply For Form 84 PDF Details

In the realm of pleasure craft ownership and operation, the Apply For 84 form emerges as a fundamental document, initiating and maintaining the lawful engagement of pleasure craft with waterways. It serves various pivotal functions, such as the application for a new licence, the transfer of ownership, updating vital personal and vessel information, duplication of a lost or damaged licence, and the cancellation of an existing licence. Each of these actions carries its own procedural requirements, detailed within the form's structure, ensuring that the pleasure craft is legally recognized and appropriately documented. The importance of holding a valid pleasure craft licence stems from its utility in emergency situations, enabling law enforcement and search and rescue personnel to swiftly identify a vessel, thereby facilitating prompt response and aid. This document underscores the legal obligation for pleasure crafts, equipped with motors totaling 10 hp (7.5 kW) or more, to be licenced, a mandate rooted in legislative changes to the Canada Shipping Act, 2001. Licences, now boasting a validity of 10 years, necessitate updates in personal, vessel, or address changes over time, although they are issued free of charge. The process stipulated by Transport Canada for licensing, whether for freshly built boats or pre-owned ones, underscores the importance of furnishing comprehensive and accurate information, alongside requisite proofs of ownership and identity, to ensure compliance and facilitate the smooth operation of pleasure crafts on Canadian waters.

Application for Pleasure Craft Licence

GENERAL INFORMATION

Use this form to:

apply for a new licence;

transfer an existing licence (when you buy a used boat, it is your responsibility to transfer the pleasure craft licence);

update your licence information;

obtain a duplicate licence; or

cancel a licence.

Why do I need a pleasure craft licence?

A valid pleasure craft licence helps law enforcement and search and rescue workers identify

pleasure craft in emergency situations. By law, any pleasure craft, including a personal watercraft, that is powered by one or more motors adding up to 10 hp (7.5 kW) or more must have a valid licence. You must display the licence number on both sides of the bow of your boat in block characters that are at least 7.5 centimetres (3 inches) high, in a colour that contrasts with the colour of the bow.

Due to recent changes in the Canada Shipping Act, 2001, pleasure craft licences are now valid for 10 years. If there are changes to your name or particulars of your vessel or address in that time, you must update your licence.

There is no charge for a pleasure craft licence.

For more information, visit Transport Canada's Office of Boating Safety at or call the Boating Safety Infoline at 1-800-267-6687.
