Before you begin, gather the engineering drawing with its current revision, the purchase order from your customer, and the manufacturing process records for the part being inspected.
- Part number and revision level: Enter the part number exactly as it appears on the engineering drawing. Record the current drawing revision in the adjacent field. Any mismatch between the form and the drawing will cause the FAI to be rejected at customer review.
- Drawing number and revision: For parts called out on a separate assembly drawing, enter that drawing number and its revision. For standalone parts, this is often the same value as the part number field.
- FAI report number: Assign a unique identifier that appears on all ten forms in the package. Your quality management system or customer contract typically defines the numbering convention.
- Batch or serial number: Record the lot number (for batch-produced parts) or the serial number (for individually serialized components) of the specific first article being inspected.
- Manufacturing process: List the key manufacturing operations applicable to this part, such as CNC machining, heat treatment, surface finishing, or non-destructive testing, as specified in the process documentation.
- FAI type: Check the appropriate box: Full FAI, Partial FAI, or Assembly FAI. If a Partial FAI is selected, include a written rationale identifying the specific change that triggered the partial inspection.
- Organization details: Enter your company name, the supplier code assigned by your customer, and the applicable purchase order number. These fields establish traceability between the FAI package and the contract.
- Completion declaration: The authorized quality representative signs and dates the form, confirming that all drawing characteristics have been inspected and that the part conforms to design requirements.

What is the difference between AS9102 Form 1 and the full FAIR package?
Form 1 is the cover sheet for the entire First Article Inspection Report (FAIR). The complete FAIR package includes all ten AS9102 forms, covering product accountability, characteristic accountability, design documentation, purchase order review, material certifications, process certifications, functional testing, appearance approval, and subsystem indices for assemblies. Form 1 must be completed first because it provides the shared identifiers referenced throughout the package.
When is a Partial FAI acceptable instead of a Full FAI?
A Partial FAI is acceptable when a previously approved part undergoes a limited change, such as a drawing revision that modifies one dimension, a process change that affects one surface treatment, or a change in raw material from one approved specification to another. The customer must agree to the Partial FAI scope before the inspection begins. If the purchase order requires a Full FAI, the supplier cannot downgrade without a formal deviation or waiver.
Does AS9102 Revision C change the fields on Form 1?
Revision C (2021) added a Design Characteristic Index reference field and updated the FAI type checkbox descriptions. The core identification fields (part number, drawing number, FAI report number, batch or serial number, organization name) remain unchanged from Revision B.
