The Cosmetology Salon License Application is filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation and is required before any cosmetology salon can legally operate in Texas. The application guides salon owners through disclosing their salon's name, type, contact information, and physical address. The physical address cannot be a P.O. box.

Ownership and Business Information

Applicants must disclose the type of ownership and provide details about each owner. Required information includes Social Security numbers collected for child support enforcement under Section 231.302(c)(1) of the Texas Family Code. For limited liability companies, the managing member's contact name must be provided. Business Federal ID numbers are required for corporations and LLCs. Sole proprietors must provide their date of birth.

Salon Premise Requirements

Before a cosmetology salon can open, applicants must affirm compliance with all applicable laws. The salon premises must meet specific health and safety standards:

• Flooring must be smooth, washable, and in good repair
• Sanitation facilities must meet state health requirements
• Residential use of the salon space is prohibited
• Separate service areas must be designated for cosmetology work
• Equipment must be appropriate for the services offered

Types of Cosmetology Salons

The licensing process covers different types of cosmetology businesses, each with its own requirements:

• Beauty salons: Full-service hair, skin, and nail services
• Manicure salons: Nail care services including manicures and pedicures
• Esthetic salons: Skin care and facial treatment services
• Hair weaving salons: Braiding, weaving, and hair extension services
• Eyelash extension salons: Lash application and care services

Application Fee and Submission

The application requires a $106 non-refundable fee. All submitted documents become the property of the TDLR and will not be returned. Applicants should keep copies of everything submitted. The application must be signed and dated by the owner or an authorized officer before submission.
