Every year businesses and organizations file for federal tax exemption with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) by completing a Form 1023. The form is used to request recognition of tax-exempt status under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code. However, there are other sections of the IRS code that offer tax exemptions for businesses and organizations, and Form DHS 390 offers an expedited process for those seeking recognition of exempt status under one of these other sections. The purpose of this blog post is to provide an overview of Form DHS 390, including what it is, who should use it, and how to complete it. We will also discuss some of the benefits of using Form DHS390 over Form 1023. Finally, we will provide a few examples illustrating how this form can be used. Stay tuned – in our next blog post we will provide a more in-depth look at each section of Form DHS 390!
