Since 1867, Canada has been a federal constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary democracy. The Canadian government is based on the Westminster system, which is modeled after the British Parliament. Canada's provinces are divided into three territories: the Northwest Territories, Yukon, and Nunavut. Each province has its own legislature and premier, while the territories are governed by appointed commissioners. The federal government is led by the prime minister and his cabinet. In 2015, Justin Trudeau became Canada's 23rd prime minister.
