Designated hitter (DH) is a batting position in baseball. A player designated as a DH may bat in place of the pitcher, pinch-hit for any other player on the team, or both. The DH does not play defense. In professional baseball leagues where the designated hitter is used, it is customary for teams to rotate one player each game from their regular lineup into the DH role. Some leagues do not use the designated hitter rule. In American League games, if there are two players available to serve as DH, one of them is typically a left-handed batter and the other a right-hander.
