A Maine vehicle bill of sale records who sold which vehicle to whom and for how much. Under Title 29-A section 752, a title or transfer document carries several details about the sale. A handwritten bill of sale is valid, as long as it carries the information the state requires.[3]
The statute lists these details:
The seller must sign the title or transfer document to certify the odometer information, and where there is more than one seller, each one signs. The buyer signs it to acknowledge the seller’s odometer disclosure, only after the required information is completed and the seller has signed.[5.4] The state’s own Motor Vehicle Bill of Sale form also states the purchase price, which is the amount the buyer agrees to pay the seller for the vehicle.[2]
A lien adds one more job for the seller. Maine’s registration law says:
An owner must provide the transferee with a properly released certificate of lien if one was issued to a lienholder.
In plain words, the seller gives the buyer a certificate showing that the lien was released, if a lienholder was issued one.
Always write the odometer reading. The seller then certifies that the reading is the actual mileage, that the odometer has passed its mechanical limit, or that the reading is not the actual mileage, and for a discrepancy gives the reasons on a form prescribed by the Secretary of State (Section 752(1)(F)).[5.6]
The steps below follow the Maine motor vehicle bill of sale template on this page, from the date at the top of page 1 to the acknowledgment on page 4. Fill in each part in the order the form shows it. You can create the form online, print the PDF and write it by hand, or fill in the PDF with our PDF editor.
Step 1: Date
Write the date on the DATE line at the top of page 1.
Step 2: Seller’s Information
Fill in the seller’s name, street address, city, state, zip code, telephone number and email address.

Step 3: Buyer’s Information
Enter the same five details for the buyer.
Step 4: Motor Vehicle Description
Write the seller’s and the buyer’s names in the sentence at the top of this part. Then fill in these fields:

Step 5: Purchase Date, Price and Payment
On page 2, enter the purchase date and the total purchase price in U.S. dollars. Then check one box for how the price is paid: all at once, trade-in, deposit, or gift.

Step 6: Payment Form and Taxes
Select one payment form: Cash, Check (add the check number), Cashier’s check or Money Order. Then check the box that says how taxes are handled.
Step 7: Miscellaneous Provisions
On page 3, read the paragraphs before you sign. This part has nothing to fill in. It covers the seller’s ownership and no-liens confirmation, the as-is sale and the entire agreement.

Step 8: Signatures
The seller, the buyer and the witness each sign, date and print their name on page 3.

Step 9: Acknowledgment
Page 4 holds an acknowledgment for a notary. To have the form notarized, sign before the notary or other officer, who completes the rest and seals it.

The Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) lists the papers you need to register a passenger vehicle bought in a private sale. The owner of a vehicle that is operated or remains on a public way is responsible for registering it, and an owner who becomes a Maine resident must register the vehicle in Maine within 30 days of establishing residency (Section 351).[6.1] A signed bill of sale comes first, and the free template on this page covers it. Here is the BMV’s list:[1]
The BMV can change its list, so check the current requirements before you go.
The BMV also lists Maine’s sales tax of 5.5% on the purchase price of the vehicle and an additional $25 for vanity plates.[1.1]
The annual registration fee for an automobile, a pickup truck registered for 6,000 pounds or less, or a sport utility vehicle used to carry passengers is $35 (Section 501(1)).[7.1]
Form MVT-32 or Odometer Information is required by the Secretary of State so that the buyer knows about the actual mileage, and the odometer reading of a vehicle can be shown on a certificate of title.

Write down who is selling to whom, then describe the vehicle and give the price. Maine’s law also asks for the odometer reading at the time of transfer, not including tenths of a mile.[5.1] The seller then signs to certify the odometer information.[5.4] Our template has a line for each of these details.
Fill in the Maine motor vehicle bill of sale template in the order the form shows, as the steps above explain. You can also write one by hand. A handwritten bill of sale is valid, as long as it carries the information the state requires.[3]
Maine has no statute that requires a bill of sale to be notarized. Our template still has a witness line and an acknowledgment page for people who want a notary to sign.
Start with a signed bill of sale, which the BMV lists for the buyer’s registration.[1] The seller also signs the title or transfer document to certify the odometer information.[5.4] If a lienholder was issued a certificate of lien, the seller must give the buyer a properly released one.[4]
