A 7 team double elimination bracket is one of the most common tournament formats for small leagues and competitions. It gives every team a second chance after one loss, keeping more teams active and engaged longer than a single elimination format would.
The bracket is divided into two sides: the winners bracket and the losers bracket. Every team starts in the winners bracket. After a first loss, a team moves to the losers bracket. A second loss in the losers bracket means elimination from the tournament.
Seven teams begin in the winners bracket. Because 7 is an uneven number, one team receives a bye in the first round. Teams win their way through until two finalists emerge: the winners bracket champion and the best team from the losers bracket. The winners bracket champion enters the final needing only one win, while the losers bracket finalist must win twice to claim the championship.
The losers bracket collects every team that has suffered one loss. Matches continue until only one team remains. That team advances to the championship round to face the winners bracket champion. This path requires more victories but gives a team that lost early another shot at the title.
Start by entering team names into the first-round slots. Record match results as games are played, moving winners forward in the winners bracket and placing losing teams into the losers bracket. Continue updating the form through each round until the championship match is complete. For other team sizes, see our 9 team double elimination bracket, the 18 team double elimination bracket, or the 23 team double elimination bracket. You can also download a 16 team seeded bracket or a tournament consolation bracket for other formats.
A double elimination tournament provides a fairer competition than single elimination because one bad game does not end a team's run. Organizers running leagues or championships prefer this format for its ability to keep teams active and engaged throughout the event. The total number of games in a 7 team double elimination bracket ranges from 11 to 13 matches, depending on whether the championship requires a second game.
