What Is Elterngeld?
Elterngeld is a German state benefit for parents who care for a newborn child. The BEEG (Bundeselterngeld- und Elternzeitgesetz) sets out the rules and eligibility criteria. Parents must file this application to receive payments. The benefit covers births from July 1, 2015, onward.

- You live in Germany or have your permanent residence in Germany
- You care for your newborn child yourself
- You do not work more than 32 hours per week during the benefit period
- You do not receive ALG II (Bürgergeld) for your own needs
Both German citizens and foreign nationals residing legally in Germany may apply. For situations involving parental rights documentation, an in-paternity affidavit may also be required alongside your application.
Documents You Will Need
Gather these documents before you start filling out the form:
- Child's birth certificate (Geburtsurkunde). You can obtain one using a birth certificate form if you have not received it yet.
- Proof of income (pay slips or tax notice) for the 12 months before the birth
- Bank account details including IBAN and BIC
- Valid ID or passport
- Registration certificate (Meldebescheinigung) confirming your German address
If you were employed, attach your last three salary slips. Self-employed applicants need their most recent tax assessment notice. Your employer may need to provide an employment verification form to confirm your work status before and after the birth.
Important Filing Deadline
Submit your application within three months of the child's birth. The state only pays retroactively for the three months before the month you applied. Filing late means you lose out on payments. Send the completed form to your local Elterngeldstelle as soon as possible.
Parents taking parental leave alongside Elterngeld should also prepare a maternity leave notification letter for their employer. This keeps your workplace informed of your absence.
