The DD Form 2873, or Military Protective Order (MPO), is issued by a commanding officer to protect individuals from contact with a service member who poses a threat. An MPO is used in cases of domestic abuse, stalking, sexual assault, or child endangerment within the military community.

The form captures full identifying details for both the subject service member and the protected person. These include rank, last and first name, sex, date of birth, race, driver's license number, state of issuance, unit, and installation. Precise identification removes any ambiguity about who is subject to the order and who is protected.

Each section of the MPO sets out the exact restrictions the service member must follow. Common prohibitions include maintaining a set physical distance from the protected person's home, workplace, or school; no direct or indirect contact by phone, text, email, or social media; no contact with the protected person's children; and participation in required counseling. The form also notes any existing civil protection orders from state or county courts so that civilian and military safeguards apply together.

Once signed, the MPO is entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database so that law enforcement nationwide can verify and enforce it. Privacy protections are built into the form: certain personal details of the protected person, such as a new address or workplace, are redacted before a copy is shared with the subject service member.

Violating an MPO is a serious offense under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ). A service member who violates the order may face non-judicial punishment under Article 15, administrative separation proceedings, or court-martial. The order remains in force until the commanding officer formally revokes it or the service member separates from active duty.
