What the Kansas Boat Bill of Sale Template Records

Kansas Boat Bill of Sale and Vessel Number Rules

No Kansas statute requires a bill of sale for a boat, and no statute prescribes what a bill of sale must contain. The vessel numbering law, K.S.A. 32-1111, does cover the application for a vessel number^[1.1] and the notice the owner sends when a boat changes hands.^[1.2]

The notice of transfer covers three events, and the statute leaves out the creation of a security interest.

• The transfer of all or any part of the owner's interest in the boat
• The destruction of the boat
• The abandonment of the boat

The statute sets the signing rule for the application in these words.^[1.1]

The application shall be signed by the owner of the vessel.

Which boats need a number? Under K.S.A. 32-1110, every undocumented, mechanically propelled vessel or sailing vessel that uses the waters of this state as its state of principal use must be numbered, except those exempted by K.S.A. 32-1113.^[2.1]

How to write a Kansas Boat Bill of Sale

1. Date at the top. Fill in the DATE line at the top of page 1 with the day you complete the form.

   

2. Section 1, Seller's information. Enter the seller's name, street address, city, state and zip code, telephone number and email address.

   

3. Section 2, Buyer's information. Enter the buyer's name, street address, city, state and zip code, telephone number and email address.

   

4. Section 3, Seller and buyer names. Write the seller's name and the buyer's name again in the sentence that opens the boat or watercraft description, before the list of what is being sold.

   

5. Section 3, Boat details. Tick the Boat box. Then enter the make, title number, year, color and Hull Identification Number (HIN).

   

6. Section 3, Hours and value of the boat. On page 2, enter the odometer reading in hours and the boat's value in U.S. dollars.

   

7. Section 3, Trailer and motor details. Tick Trailer to give its make, license plate number, color, VIN, year and value. Tick Motor to give the make, horsepower, serial number and value. A second Motor block is there for a second motor. Leave unticked what is not sold.

   

8. Section 4, Purchase date and total price. Enter the purchase date (month, day and year) and the total purchase price in U.S. dollars.

   

9. Section 4, How the price is paid. Tick one option. You can pay all at once on the purchase date, pay with a deposit, or record the boat as a gift with no consideration paid. For a deposit, add the deposit date and the date the balance is due in full.

   

10. Section 4, Payment method. Tick one method: cash, check, cashier's check or money order. For a check, add the check number.

    

11. Taxes and Section 5. Tick whether the applicable taxes are included in the purchase price or are not included. Then read Section 5, which covers the seller's ownership confirmation, the as-is sale and the entire-agreement clause. It has nothing to fill in.

    

12. Section 6, Signatures. The seller and the buyer each sign, print their name and date their line. The form also has one witness line with a printed name and date.

    

13. Acknowledgment, State of Kansas. Page 4 holds an acknowledgment block. If you use it, sign before the notary, then enter the county, the date, the officer's name and title, and the name of the person who personally appeared.

    

14. Acknowledgment, signature and seal line. The notary public or other officer completing the certificate signs on the Signature line and adds the seal. This is the last line of the form.

    

After everyone signs, give the original to the buyer and keep a copy for your records.
