The steps below follow our South Dakota motor vehicle bill of sale template, from the date at the top to the acknowledgment on page 4. Fill in each part in the order the form shows it. You can create the form online, print the PDF and write it by hand, or fill in the PDF with our PDF editor.
Step 1: Date
Write the date on the DATE line at the top of page 1.
Step 2: Seller’s Information
In Section 1, fill in the seller’s name, street address, city, state, zip code, telephone number and email address.
Step 3: Buyer’s Information
In Section 2, enter the same five details for the buyer.
Step 4: Motor Vehicle Description
In Section 3, write both names in the sentence at the top. Then fill in these fields:
Step 5: Purchase Date and Price
On page 2, in Section 4, enter the purchase date and the total purchase price in U.S. dollars. Then check one option: all at once, trade-in with the buyer’s vehicle details, a deposit with a balance date, or a gift.
Step 6: Payment Method and Taxes
Select Cash, Check (with the check number), Cashier’s check or Money order. Then check whether taxes are included in the price.
Step 7: Miscellaneous Provisions
On page 3, read Section 5 before you sign. This part has nothing to fill in. It covers the seller’s ownership and no-liens statement and the as-is sale.
Step 8: Signatures
In Section 6, the seller and the buyer each sign, date and print their name. The form also has a Witness line.
Step 9: Acknowledgment
To have a notary complete the form, sign before the notary in the acknowledgment on page 4. The notary fills in the county, date, name, title, signature and seal.
After the sale, the buyer applies for a South Dakota certificate of title. The application must be filed within 45 days of the date the title is assigned to you, and a late application draws an additional fee.[3.3] The application comes with the certificate of title duly assigned, unless the chapter provides otherwise. The application also states the applicant’s title and all liens and encumbrances on the vehicle.[2]
If no certificate of title has previously been issued in South Dakota for the vehicle, the application can instead come with one of these:[3.1]
A vehicle eleven years old or more with no record can also get a title. The person applies by submitting these items:[3.2]

Form 1024 or Seller’s Report of Sale notifies the state about transferring of a vehicle/boat to another owner.
Use this form if you need to appoint someone else to control the matters regarding your vehicle.
Duplicate Title Application (Form 1002) is submitted if the original title is lost, stolen, or damaged.
Application for Replacement can be submitted to a local county treasurer’s office to replace boat registration stickers that have been lost or damaged.

South Dakota has no statute that requires a bill of sale to be notarized. The state’s rule describes a bill of sale as a signed document.[1] Our template includes an acknowledgment on page 4 for people who choose to have a notary sign as well.
It is a signed document that carries the calendar date of the sale, the full name of the buyer and the amount paid, stated in U.S. currency.[1] Our template also asks for the seller’s details and the vehicle’s make, model, year, odometer reading and VIN.
