ICE Form I-983

The ICE Form I-983 is used by F-1 students who have been employed by a legal job provider. Only those students who have found an employer are authorized to participate in a STEM OPT extension. It is necessary to be hired and supervised by a professional because no student can provide employer attestations on their own behalf. In the following part, you will learn the details about a STEM OPT.

What is a STEM OPT?

The STEM OPT is a 24-month training program available for F-1 students (depending on their specialty). To apply for this extensive course, an individual has to:

  • Finish a regular post-completion OPT;
  • Prove that they have a degree in an eligible STEM field;
  • Find an employer who will be ready to hire an applicant and evaluate the student’s result during the training program;
  • Work at least 20 hours per week for the selected employer.

Apart from the work provider’s evaluation, the program participant has to do self-evaluation once per annum and report to their DSO about the results they have achieved. The trainee and the employer must inform the DSO of any money-related changes concerning the student’s official training plan. Please, note that the employer is obliged to notify the DSO if the student initiates the termination of their agreement no later than five working days after finishing their business relationship. Each trainee obtaining the program is allowed to remain unemployed for a period of not exceeding 150 days.
