Registering a Vehicle in Missouri

Once the bill of sale form is correctly filled out and signed, new owners must register their motor vehicle by 30 days after the official purchase to avoid penalties, late fees, or fines.

When the time comes to register the new motor vehicle, buyers will need to present documentation in person to their closest Missouri Vehicle Registration office. Titles must include signatures of both parties on the reverse side and, in some cases, may also require notarization. The overall registration package for a used motor vehicle obtained in a private deal includes:

  • Title certificate that includes VIN and signatures of all parties
  • Car bill of sale filled out and signed by both parties
  • Inspection of the motor vehicle by an inspection station approved by the state
  • Odometer Reading Disclosure Statement (only for vehicles 10 years of age or less weighing under 16,000 pounds)
  • Proof of safety and emissions inspection
  • Up-to-date photo ID
  • Proof of insurance

In addition to the required documentation, buyers will need to be prepared to pay all fees, including title and registration fees and taxes, at the time of registration. Title fees are $8.50, registration is $6.00, and the state sales tax is 4.225%. In some cases, buyers can register vehicles for more than one year, paying $12 for a two-year registration. The state of Missouri also has a local sales tax, which buyers will need to pay as well. If the vehicle was purchased out of state but will be registered in the state of Missouri, buyers will need to show proof of sales tax and may be subject to only local taxes (if any).

The registration renewal might happen once per year or two years, which is up to the vehicle owner. It is possible to do it online using the Missouri Department of Revenue portal, in person at one of the Missouri license offices, or by mail.
